Wood Sculpture: Natural materials, spices (cloves and star anise), oil sticks

Not for sale

I saved this tree trunk years ago when neighbours cut down a tree next to our property in Okanagan Centre. I found it to be a beautiful, strong and powerful symbol (feminine for me) even though it was ancient, broken, battered and decaying. It was a reminder of the life cycle and the natural processes of birth, death, ageing, transformation, and evolution. As I worked on this sculpture I was aware of the ancient feminine tradition of anointing bodies with oils and spices as a way of honouring and revering them. I added accents with oil sticks as a way of highlighting the trees contours.
